Finding the cause of the Ford Ranger breakdown
The first priority was to identify why the fleet vehicle had stopped. When we attended the Ranger, we found the drive belt tensioner had broken and the drive belt had shredded. The photographs show the fractured tensioner assembly, separated material and extensive damage to the belt.
Those findings were important because the damaged belt was only part of the repair. The failed tensioner also needed replacing. Fitting another belt while leaving the broken tensioner in place would not address the fault we had found.
What does a drive belt tensioner do?
The tensioner maintains tension in the accessory drive belt as the engine runs. The belt transfers drive to accessories, with the exact arrangement depending on the vehicle. A tensioner fault can disrupt belt operation; loss of tension can lead to slipping, noise, heat and premature belt failure.
In this Ranger, we found a physically broken assembly and a shredded belt. Other vehicles can have different causes of belt damage, so a similar symptom needs its own inspection. A new belt alone should not be treated as a diagnosis.
Organising a new tensioner and drive belt on-site
After identifying the failed parts, we arranged a replacement drive belt tensioner and a new drive belt during the call-out. We replaced both components and got the Ranger running again.
The old-and-new comparison photo records the tensioner replacement, while the close-ups show why the original assembly could not remain in service. Another image shows the replacement tensioner in the engine bay during the repair, before the belt was fitted.
For this customer, having the parts organised and the repair carried out on-site meant the stranded driver could get back to the delivery work. The call-out combined diagnosis, parts sourcing and the mechanical repair in one visit.
Getting a fleet vehicle back to its deliveries
A stopped delivery vehicle affects both the driver and the business waiting for the work to be completed. In this case, the outcome was straightforward: the Ranger was going again and the driver could continue the deliveries. The customer was extremely pleased that we could help during the breakdown.
This Preston job is an example of a mobile repair we were able to complete at the vehicle. The suitability of another breakdown for on-site work depends on the fault, parts availability and access to a safe working location.
