2017 Toyota Hilux Headlight Upgrade, Wiring Repair & Major Service

Eddie The Mobile Mechanic recently completed a Toyota Hilux headlight upgrade and major service on a customer’s 2017 diesel Hilux, with all work carried out on-site. We upgraded both headlights, repaired damaged wiring and worked through an access problem caused by the vehicle’s bullbar. During the same visit, we carried out a complete vehicle inspection, replaced the engine oil and four filters, fitted a new drive belt and repaired the door handles.

It was a good example of how mobile 4WD servicing can bring several jobs together in one visit. The customer was very satisfied with the completed work and the result of the headlight upgrade.

Upgrading both headlights with a bullbar in the way

The Hilux’s bullbar was the main access challenge. Its position in front of the headlights made this more involved than a straightforward headlamp change on a vehicle with an unobstructed front end.

We worked through the restricted access and completed the upgrade on both sides. The photographs show the original headlight arrangement, a replacement headlamp assembly and the upgraded headlights fitted to the vehicle. They also show why the bullbar needed to be considered as part of the job.

For this Hilux, completing the work meant addressing the vehicle’s actual setup as well as fitting the headlights. It was a practical on-site job involving both the physical access around the bullbar and the electrical wiring.

Repairing the damaged headlight wiring

Damaged wiring was another issue we needed to address during the upgrade. We repaired the wiring as part of the headlight work, rather than leaving that fault unresolved when the new assemblies were fitted.

The close-up photographs document the damaged connector and the wiring work. Including those details helps explain the work behind the finished appearance: this visit involved a wiring repair as well as the headlight upgrade itself.

With the access issue worked through and the wiring repaired, we completed both headlight upgrades smoothly. The customer was very happy with the result.

A major service during the same visit

While we were on-site, we also carried out a major service on the diesel Hilux. Combining the service with the lighting work meant the customer could have several maintenance and repair needs attended to during the same appointment.

The service included replacement of:

Engine oil
Oil filter
Engine air filter
Cabin filter
Fuel filter

These are the items replaced on this particular vehicle during this visit. A service should be planned around the individual vehicle, its condition and its maintenance requirements; this case study records the work completed on this customer’s Hilux.

Complete inspection and worn drive belt replacement

As mobile mechanics specialising in 4WD work, we also completed a full vehicle inspection during the appointment. This gave us the opportunity to look beyond the original headlight request and address other work the Hilux needed.

The old drive belt was showing wear, so we replaced it during the visit. It was an additional maintenance item alongside the oil and filter changes, and a useful example of why an inspection matters even when a booking begins with a specific repair or upgrade.

Door handle repairs

We also repaired the vehicle’s door handles. Although this was separate from the headlight and service work, it was another practical issue we could resolve for the customer during the same on-site appointment.

By the end of the visit, the completed work covered lighting, damaged wiring, routine servicing, a worn drive belt and the door handles.
